Marion Stanley Stawnicz, age 91, passed away peacefully on Sunday, September 29, 2024. Born in Bremond, Texas, on July 1, 1933, Marion’s life was a testament to hard work, adventure, and devotion to his family and community. At the age of 18, he moved to Houston, where he began his journey as a successful entrepreneur, eventually owning two full-service Gulf gas stations and a house-moving business. An avid rancher, hunter, fisherman, and outdoorsman, Marion embraced the rugged beauty of Texas.
In 1977, he purchased a tractor dealership in Normangee, Texas, and later took on the Kubota line, becoming one of the first Kubota tractor dealers in Central Texas. Normangee Tractor & Implement Company soon became the highest volume (single store location) Kubota tractor dealer in North America.
Marion was one of the founding members of St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church in Franklin, Texas, and he was also a member of St. Anthony’s Catholic Church in Bryan, Texas. His contributions to his community extended beyond the church, as he served as a longtime board member of Robertson County Crime Stoppers and for 45 years supported the youth of Leon, Robertson and surrounding counties by purchasing countless county fair livestock projects.
Marion was a proud husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. He is preceded in death by his father and mother, Joe Stawnicz and Frances Syzdek Stawnicz; sister and brother-in-law, Peggy and Floyd Rudek; brother and sister-in-law, Raymond and Frances Stanish; sister, Barbara “Bobbie” Gibbens; and daughter-in-law, Betty Stawnicz.
Marion is survived by his wife, Marie (Marino) Stawnicz. This coming November, the two would have celebrated 72 years of marriage. He is also survived by his children and their spouses, Marie C. “Cathy” Lyles (Sonny) and Marion Vernon Stawnicz (Arlene). Additionally, Marion is survived by his grandchildren, Doug Lyles (Jennifer), Stephanie Towse (Brandon), Pam Fannin (Clayton), and Mary Whitworth. Further, he is survived by his great grandchildren, Elliot Lyles, Lucy Lyles, Mia Towse, Bodie Towse, Emma Rekieta, Cade Fannin, Hunter Whitworth, and Madison Whitworth. Marion is also survived by his brother and sister-in-law, Robert and Madeline Stawnicz; brother-in-law, Frank Marino (Barbara); brother-in-law, Wayne Gibbens, and many nieces and nephews.
Marion’s family would like to give special thanks for the love, compassion, gentle care, and support he received in the final weeks of his life from the staff at Crossroads Nursing and Rehabilitation and Amedisys Hospice, and all his long-term caregivers, especially family friend, Sylvia Montelongo.
The many hours spent with family and friends around countless campfires at the Frank James place for almost 60 years were incredibly impactful on anyone who was blessed to attend, and those campfire buddies who have passed on rejoiced when they were reunited with Marion in Heaven this week. Marion’s family looks forward to keeping his spirit alive through this tradition for many years to come and family members hope they can pass the pearls of wisdom he imparted to them on to future generations.
